In-depth Project Goals

  • Troubleshoot water filter to increase flow and optimize efficiency (located in the fish pond)

    • Create a straining solution for water flowing into the pump/filter

  • Reconstruct PVC section between Beds 2 and 4 to increase flow into the Long Bed

    • Clear out stagnant water and moss growth in Bed 4

    • Exchange current bed media for new media in Bed 4

    • Consider painting Beds 3 and 4 to reduce algae growth due to over-heating and sun exposure

    • Increase capability of gravitational flow across pipe section

      • Currently a 7 inch decrease in height across a 126.5 inch long pipe

  • Demonstrate the direction of water flow through the system for educational purposes

    • Label pipes

    • Label beds

    • Create an educational booklet or pamphlet

      • Include information regarding fish and plant care

Optimizing our Aquaponics System

Linked here is our teams first team reflective writing.

The piece introduces Middlebrook Gardens and the importance of the aquaponics system in the CNGF's camps, programs and workshops. Aquaponics demonstrates the importance of the coexistence of living organisms and nonliving components of the environment. The natural cycles and processes of aquaponics produce organic and pesticide-free produce, also enforcing healthy and organic food education. As students are pushed into a more global and less sustainable world, our reflection reinforces the notion that aquaponics may serve as a fantastic resource to bring individuals back to their roots. The document also discusses the current threats to Middlebrook Gardens by developmental projects, the social and environmental impacts of a fully functioning aquaponics system for the San Jose community, as well as our project's unique value proposition.

Middlebrook Gardens and Civic Life

Linked here is our teams second team reflective writing.

This piece critically evaluates the role of public organizations in civic life. More specifically, it aims to address the organizations that play a role in public policy surrounding the problems raised by our aquaponics system. That is, how urban community gardens create a sense of community and promote healthy living within the San Jose community, as well as at large. It also discusses how our aquaponics system addresses a wide range of environmental and educational problems and reviews the civic issues that our design considers.
