Community Partner Visit #3: Minutes

On May 07th, our team stopped by Middlebrook Gardens to take a few final measurements and begin implementing some of our design changes. See our notes below!

The results of our Nitrate/Nitrite test were as follows:

Pond Input: approximately 0.5 ppm

Media Bed Input: between 0.5-2.0 ppm

Nitrate levels must be less than 5 ppm, and are ideally between 0.5 and 1 ppm. As such, we concluded that there is no need to address nitrate or nitrite levels throughout the system.

The results of our measurements of Bed #4 were as follows:

These measurements result in approximately 15 cubic feet of media needed to fill the bed to an appropriate level. After a brief cost analysis, we were able to conclude that purchasing lava rock would cost approximately $60.00 USD and purchasing expanded clay pebbles would cost approximately $230.00 USD. As such, we have decided to spend the time to move media from the Hester Garden to the Middlebrook Garden location. Additionally, it was decided that the bed would be planted with either tomatoes or spinach and arugula upon completion.

The results of our measurements of the filter were as follows:

After taking said measurements, we came to the conclusion that we will be using a rigid plastic mesh and industrial strength velcro to create a new filter that is easy to remove and clean. The components are shown below. On Sunday, May 12th, I was able to visit a Michael's store and purchase the below supplies. The total cost was $11.13. A sketch of our final design will be posted shortly!
