Team Meeting: April 09
Community Partner Visit #1: Minutes
On April 9th, our team met with Alrie on-site to ask questions and collect important information regarding the current aquaponics systems. See our notes below!
-
The highest priority project is the redesign of an aquaponics system at the 76 Race Street, San Jose location
-
Our audience is the community as a whole, but more specifically middle school students (ages 13-15) who will be exposed to STEM and aquaponics through the system
-
Primary goal is to teach summer camp children
-
-
The current issues with the system are vast, but all revolve around either a lack of water flow or an excess of water flow:
-
-
The styrofoam rafts need to be redesigned
-
The water flow into the lower, rafted section is nonexistent
-
Though the IBC's (industrial grade reusable containers) are more successful than the rafts, the watercress is often damaged by turbulent water flow
-
-
Improvements can include, but are not limited to:
-
Designing and producing new, reusable or recyclable rafts
-
Balancing water flow throughout the entire cycle
-
-
Challenges may include:
-
Location is compact, not to mention at risk from the City of San Jose's development project
-
-
An aquaponics system fits with the organization's current mission in that it provides a space geared towards students to be exposed to hands-on STEM projects and gain a greater awareness of sustainability and eco-friendly design
